How to Factory Reset Your iPhone Before Selling: Complete Checklist

Selling or trading in your old iPhone? A proper factory reset takes about 15 minutes and ensures your personal data is gone, the new owner can activate the phone without issues, and you're not leaving an active Activation Lock that bricks the device for the buyer. Skip any of these steps and you could be looking at an unhappy buyer, an unresellable phone, or worse — a data leak.

This checklist works for any iPhone running iOS 15 or later.

Why Just Deleting Apps Isn't Enough

Deleting apps, photos, and messages manually does not erase your data. Here's why:

• Deleted files are not actually erased — iOS marks the storage space as available but doesn't overwrite the data immediately. Forensic tools can recover deleted files.
• Your Apple ID remains linked — Without signing out, Activation Lock stays active. The new owner will be unable to activate the phone without your Apple ID and password.
• iCloud, email, and payment accounts remain set up and accessible.
• iMessage continues to receive messages tied to your phone number on that device.

The only safe approach is a full Erase All Content and Settings, done after completing all the steps below.

The Complete Pre-Sale Checklist

Step 1: Back Up Your iPhone

Before erasing anything, make sure you have a complete backup of your data. You have two options:

Option A — iCloud Backup (easier):

1. Connect to Wi-Fi
2. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup
3. Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to complete
4. Verify the backup completed: the date and time under "Last Successful Backup" should show the current date

Option B — Mac/PC Backup (more thorough):

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC via USB
2. On Mac: open Finder, select your iPhone, click Back Up Now
3. On PC: open iTunes, select your device, click Back Up Now
4. Check the "Encrypt local backup" box if you want to back up Health data and saved passwords

Do not proceed to the next steps until your backup is confirmed complete.

Step 2: Sign Out of Apple ID / iCloud

This is the single most important step. Signing out of Apple ID removes Activation Lock, which would otherwise prevent the new owner from ever using the phone.

1. Go to Settings > [Your Name]
2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out
3. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
4. Choose what to keep on your device (it doesn't matter — you'll be erasing everything anyway)
5. Tap Sign Out again to confirm

If you see a "Find My" prompt, you'll need to turn it off first (see Step 3).

Step 3: Turn Off Find My iPhone

Find My iPhone is part of Activation Lock. Even if you sign out of Apple ID, some older iOS versions keep Find My linked to the device until explicitly disabled.

1. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Find My
2. Tap Find My iPhone
3. Toggle Find My iPhone off
4. Enter your Apple ID password to confirm

If the toggle is already off after signing out in Step 2, you're good.

Step 4: Unpair Apple Watch (if applicable)

If you've paired an Apple Watch with this iPhone, you must unpair it before erasing the iPhone — otherwise the Watch will be stuck without a linked phone and may reset itself unexpectedly.

1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone
2. Tap All Watches in the top left
3. Tap the ⓘ next to your Watch
4. Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm

This creates a final backup of your Watch data on the iPhone before unpairing.

Step 5: Remove eSIM (if selling internationally or to a different carrier)

If your iPhone has an eSIM line and you're selling to someone who will use a different carrier — or selling internationally — remove the eSIM first.

1. Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data)
2. Tap your eSIM plan
3. Tap Delete eSIM

If you're selling to someone on the same carrier, they may be able to transfer the eSIM. Contact your carrier for guidance.

Note: A physical SIM card is simply removed by ejecting the SIM tray with a SIM ejector tool.

Step 6: Erase All Content and Settings

Now it's time for the actual factory reset.

iOS 15 and earlier: Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

iOS 16 and later: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings

You'll be prompted for:

• Your iPhone passcode
• Your Apple ID password (if it hasn't been removed yet)

The erase process takes 5–15 minutes depending on storage size. The phone will restart to the "Hello" setup screen when complete — the same screen a brand-new iPhone shows out of the box.

Step 7: Remove the Device from Your Apple ID Account

Even after erasing, your iPhone may still appear in your Apple ID device list. Removing it keeps your account clean and confirms Activation Lock is fully cleared.

1. Go to appleid.apple.com on a computer or another device
2. Sign in with your Apple ID
3. Under Devices, find your old iPhone
4. Click on it, then click Remove from Account

Alternatively: on another Apple device, go to Settings > [Your Name], scroll down to see your devices, tap the old iPhone, and tap Remove from Account.

What Is Activation Lock and Why Does It Matter?

Activation Lock is a security feature that ties your iPhone to your Apple ID. If a stolen iPhone is wiped but not properly signed out, the thief (or an unknowing buyer) will hit an Activation Lock screen asking for the original owner's Apple ID and password — with no way to bypass it.

This is exactly why checking for Activation Lock before buying a used iPhone is essential. If you receive an iPhone that's Activation Locked and can't reach the original owner, the phone is essentially a paperweight.

Selling your iPhone with Activation Lock still on makes it unsellable and can get you flagged on resale platforms like Swappa or eBay. Complete Steps 2–3 above to ensure Activation Lock is removed.
