Poor Cell Signal on Your Phone? It Might Be a Hardware Problem

Weak signal isn't always your carrier's fault. Learn how to tell if your phone's antenna is damaged — and what to do about it.

Is It Your Carrier or Your Phone?

Poor cell signal is frustrating — but before you call your carrier to complain, it's worth ruling out a hardware problem on the phone itself. Antenna damage is more common than most people realize, and it's often caused by something as simple as a drop or a repair that didn't go quite right.

The key question is: are other phones in the same location getting signal while yours doesn't? If a friend standing next to you, on the same carrier, has four bars while you have one — the problem is almost certainly your phone, not the network.

Four Signs the Problem Is Your Phone, Not Your Carrier

1. Other Phones Nearby Have Normal Signal

This is the clearest diagnostic test you can run without any tools. Borrow a phone (ideally the same carrier, but even a different carrier helps) and compare signal bars at the same spot. If the other phone pulls strong signal and yours doesn't, your antenna is the likely culprit.

2. Signal Problems Started After a Drop

Antenna flex cables run through tight channels inside the phone body — along the frame, behind the battery, and around the logic board. A sharp impact can crack a flex cable trace or dislodge a connector without causing any visible external damage. If your signal dropped after your phone hit the ground, connect those two events.

3. Signal Dropped After a Battery Replacement

This is one of the most common causes we see in our shops. Battery replacement requires removing connectors that sit close to — and sometimes underneath — antenna flex cables. A technician who works too quickly, or who isn't familiar with a particular model's layout, can forget to reconnect an antenna cable.

The result is a phone that works fine for calls and data but suddenly can't hold WiFi, or drops from 5G to LTE, or shows one bar where it used to show four. If your signal problems started within days of a battery replacement — anywhere, not just with us — an improperly reconnected antenna connector is the first thing to check.

4. Only Certain Bands Are Affected

Modern smartphones contain multiple independent antenna systems: LTE, 5G sub-6GHz, 5G mmWave (on some models), WiFi 2.4GHz, WiFi 5GHz/6GHz, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. Each uses a separate antenna or antenna segment.

If your 5G drops out but LTE still works, that's a specific antenna fault — not a carrier outage, which would kill everything. Similarly, if WiFi is strong but Bluetooth is intermittent, or GPS locks slowly while everything else works, those patterns point to a specific antenna subsystem rather than a general software problem.

How Antennas Work in Modern Phones

Unlike the external whip antennas on old flip phones, today's antennas are almost invisible. They're implemented as flex cable antennas — thin circuits printed on flexible plastic — routed through narrow channels inside the phone body.

In iPhones, the metal band around the edge of the phone is itself part of the antenna system. Apple segments the band into sections using small plastic gaps (the lines you can see on the side of any iPhone), and each segment handles a different frequency range. This is elegant engineering, but it also means that denting the frame, bending the phone, or damaging the flex cable that connects to the band can degrade reception.

In Android phones, antennas are typically flex cables mounted behind the back glass or routed around the battery cavity. Some models route the primary LTE antenna through the back cover itself — which means that using a thick metal case can actually interfere with signal by blocking the antenna's field.

All phones also include antenna contact points — small spring-loaded pads that make physical contact between the antenna flex and the logic board. These contacts oxidize over time (especially after water exposure) or lose their spring tension after a hard drop, creating intermittent connections that cause inconsistent signal.

Common Damage Points

Drop Impact — Cracked Antenna Trace

The flex cables that carry antenna signals are durable but not indestructible. A hard corner drop can crack the conductive trace inside a flex cable without tearing the cable itself. The damage is invisible from the outside and often survives basic handling — but under signal load, the cracked trace causes dropped connections.

Water Damage — Oxidized Contact Points

Water and electronics produce corrosion. Even phones rated for water resistance can suffer antenna degradation after extended exposure or submersion past their rated depth. The antenna contact pads — those small spring contacts mentioned above — are particularly vulnerable because they're not soldered to the board; they rely on physical pressure. Oxidation creates resistance, and resistance in an antenna circuit means lost signal.

Previous Repair — Disconnected Antenna Connector

As noted above, this is a leading cause of post-repair signal problems. Opening a phone for any reason — screen, battery, charging port — requires navigating around antenna connectors. On some iPhone models, three or four separate antenna connectors are in the work zone for a battery swap. A rushed repair or an unfamiliar technician can leave one disconnected.

If this happened to you, the fix is simple: the phone needs to be opened and the connector reseated. The part itself is undamaged; it just isn't making contact.

Back Glass Repair — Torn Flex Cable

Back glass replacement is one of the more invasive repairs, especially on recent iPhones where the glass is bonded with industrial adhesive. Removing the old glass requires heat and careful prying. The antenna flex cables that run along the interior of the back glass can be nicked or torn during this process. On iPhone 12 and newer models, there are multiple antenna structures laminated to the back glass — replacing the glass without damaging them requires specific tooling and technique.

DIY Troubleshooting Before You Come In

Before booking a repair visit, try these steps. They cost nothing and occasionally resolve signal issues that turn out to be software-related:

Step 1 — Reseat the SIM card. Power off the phone, eject the SIM tray, remove the SIM, wait 10 seconds, reinsert it, and power back on. A poorly seated SIM causes all kinds of cell signal problems and takes 30 seconds to rule out.

Step 2 — Try a different SIM. Borrow a SIM from a family member (make sure it's the right size — nano SIM vs. eSIM). If signal improves dramatically with a different SIM, your SIM card itself may be defective.

Step 3 — Update carrier settings (iPhone). Go to Settings > General > About and wait a few seconds. If a carrier settings update is available, a prompt will appear. Carrier updates occasionally include antenna configuration changes and are separate from iOS updates. Most people never install them.

Step 4 — Cycle Airplane Mode. Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 30 seconds, then toggle it off. This forces the modem to reconnect to the network and re-register on the best available band. It sounds trivial, but it clears stuck radio states that can persist through normal restarts.

Step 5 — Check APN settings. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Cellular Data Network (this menu is hidden if your carrier auto-configures it). Incorrect APN settings — sometimes introduced by a carrier switch or a factory reset — can prevent data from working even when voice calls are fine.

If none of these steps help, the problem is almost certainly hardware.

FAQ

My phone says "No Service" — is that always an antenna problem?

Not always. "No Service" can mean a carrier outage, a disabled or blacklisted IMEI, an expired account, or a bad SIM — before assuming hardware damage, confirm your account is active and try a different SIM. If the problem persists with a known-good SIM, bring it in.

Can a cracked screen affect signal?

Rarely, but yes. If the crack is severe enough to damage components beneath the glass — or if the cracked screen repair process disconnected an antenna cable — signal can degrade. The more common scenario is that a drop cracked the screen and damaged an antenna flex cable in the same impact.

How long does antenna repair take?
